On a trip to Switzerland last week I saw the bizarre bit of branding which is Editions, the new range extension from Red Bull: Silver (lime), Blue (blueberry) and Red (cranberry). The range was also launched in Germany last September.
I'm really not sure this will give the sales of Red Bull wings. Let's have a look why.
Addressing a barrier to trial?
Let's start with the good stuff first. The role of core range extension can be to overcome barrier to trial. And perhaps Editions addresses such a barrier by changing the taste of the product? I'm not a big Red Bull drinker, but I have heard that some people like the energy it offers, but not the taste. As the advertising for Editions states, it offers "New tastes, same energy".
However, even if the new taste benefit is relevant, the problem is whether people will pick it off the shelf...which brings us to the next point.
Breaking memory structure, not building on it
Editions' bizzare branding fails to build on one of the world's strongest identities. The Red Bull visual identity is very powerful and helps you find Red Bull on auto-pilot. It has several key elements, none of which are used in Editions:
RED BULL vs. EDITIONS
1. The 4-quadrant design vs. Block of colour
2. Red, silver, blue vs. Red or silver or blue
3. The two clashing bulls in the middle vs. Bit of one bull
4. Red Bull name in red, centrally positioned vs. Red Bull small, vertical on the side
By breaking all these codes, it looks on shelf like there are three new products called Blue, Silver and Red.
Creating fresh consistency
The challenge with Editions, as with any range extension, is balancing two conflicting objectives:
1. Freshness: to make the new range stand out
2. Consistency: to build on the brand memory structure
In the case of Editions freshness clearly won the day.
A better balance was achieved with the sugar free version. This kept three of the four key elements of the brand identity (quadrants, name and bull), changing only the colours. This means you can distinguish the two versions on shelf, but it still looks like Red Bull.
In conclusion, Red Bull Editions shows the challenge of creating fresh consistency with range extension design. In my view, Editions has gone too far towards freshness, and this will reduce the ease of shopping at the shelf.
It will be interesting to see the decision of UK marketing director, Huib van Bockel. He was quoted in Marketing this week as being in the process of deciding "if and when" to launch Editions.

Hi Cara:Great question. Brown rice detieifnly trumps white. Though from the outside there may not seem to be much of a difference, what you don’t see are the numerous vitamins and minerals found in the whole grain.Brown rice belongs to a whole class of whole grains including wheat, barley, rye, oats, amaranth, buckwheat, corn, and bulgur. In its whole form, grains contain the entire seed (or kernel) of the plant. A single seed of grain contains three distinct parts: the bran, the endosperm and germ. If all three parts of the grain are present, the food is considered a whole grain.BRAN: The outer seed layer full of fiber, B vitamins, 50 to 80 percent of the grain’s minerals, and other health- promoting plant substances called phytochemicals. GERM: The inner embryo full of B vitamins, vitamin E, trace minerals, and small amounts of healthful unsaturated fats, phytochemicals and antioxidants.ENDOSPERM: The starchy middle containing carbohydrates, some protein and smaller amounts of B vitamins. On the other hand, refined grain foods contain only the endosperm, the least nutritious part of the seed. White rice, for example, is the endosperm of a rice kernel, and white bread is made from the endosperm of a wheat kernel. Typically, the germ and bran are removed during milling. This reduces the nutrient content by 25 to 90 percent. Most refined grain foods are enriched with some, but not most, of the nutrients lost in milling.Since vitamins and minerals don’t have calories, you won’t notice a caloric difference. And depending on the grain, it will vary in how much fiber it has. If you are looking to increase your fiber intake, best bets include barley and bulgur, which come in at about 4 grams of fiber per bd cup. Brown rice will have 2 grams per bd cup serving.Best!Jane

My 2 teenage boys have cross courtny practice every day after school and don’t get home until after 5 PM. They don’t like the cafeteria food and pack their own lunch. Can you recommend some good lunch options that keep them awake during the afternoon classes and fueled up for a 10 mile run afterwards?BarbaraHi Barbara,Your boys will do best with a high carbohydrate lunch along with a small amount of protein and limited amount of fat. Carbs, stored in the liver and muscles, are the first go-to source of energy called upon during exercise (after whatever is lingering in the bloodstream). If they eat lunch around noon, I assume they have at least three or so hours to digest before their run. This leaves enough time for a nice hearty lunch of about 700-800 calories (including snacks). They can opt to save a snack for an hour or so before the run, depending on how they feel. Here are a few options:SANDWICHES: choose whole grain breads, wraps, rolls or pita, but not those with more than 2-3 grams of fiber per serving. You don’t want to have too much fiber the meal before a run. Add small amounts of mayo, mustard or avocado for flavor. Include lettuce or spinach for crunch and extra vitamins.• Peanut butter (Smuckers Natural is my favorite) and jelly• Turkey or roast beef (2-3 oz tops)• Tuna salad made with small amount of mayo, chopped celery• Leftover grilled chicken sandwichPASTA SALAD: Mix with a few chopped veggies such as carrots, peppers, and celery if they won’t mind. Then choose a small amount of additional protein, but not more than 2-3 ounces. You can also do the straight pasta/veggies without extra animal protein (the pasta will have enough of the protein they need for now). Try a mixed whole grain/regular white pasta like Barilla Whole Grain, which is bd and bd). Add:• Chopped leftover chicken• Canned tuna or salmon• Finish with a nice vinaigrette made from olive oil, lemon juice or vinegar, salt and pepperYou can also send them with a leftover pasta dish from dinner if they have an opportunity to heat something up.BAGEL: You can pack a bagel with a little bit of cream cheese. Pair with a yogurt and banana or other piece of fruit. Be sure to pack some carb filled snacks which could include any of the following:• Granola bars (protein should not be more than 6 grams, and carbs at least 25 – I favor the TLC bars, crunchy or chewy).• Crackers (I favor Triscuits as they are usually well-liked and made with whole wheat). are very tasty too.• Dry low sugar cereal like Cheerios or Chex• Fruit, fresh and/or dried (no added sugar)• Applesauce, no added sugar• PretzelsThey can replenish with chocolate milk (and water of course) after the run. I usually get the Horizon organic individually packed. The milk gives them a shot of protein and carb, and has been shown to be the perfect recovery fuel (). Have them drink it within 30-60 minutes of finishing their run.Best!Jane

Hi Betties! First off your page is great, love it! I was wondering where or how to cretae a good workout plan. I've been using muscle and fitness hers. I'm relatively new to working out and love it. I've been doing it for about a year and have noticed results, but I want to be better. A few years back, I set a goal to lose weight and lost 120 pds with healthy eating, now I'd like to get into shape and maybe one day try a fitness competition(no where near that right now), but I have no idea where to start. Any help would be awesome, you ladies are inspiring.

Nicely gjort.
